![]() ![]() There are two main tools we’ll use to hit the correct volume levels: Compressors / Limiters, and Maximizers. The best idea is to use Apple / Google’s standard so we’re not getting our podcasts turned down by the streaming service and possibly compressed, changing the sound.Īpple and Google both use -16LUFS integrated and a -1.0dB True Peak. However, 36% of the market uses either Apple or Google podcasts to listen to their podcasts, both of which use a quieter standard than Spotify and it’s 25% of users. Loudness standards will vary from platform to platform. Transients: Initial impact / sudden spikes in your audio. For our purposes we’ll want to keep everything under -1.0dB. True Peak: Measured in dB instead of LUFS, this is the highest dBFS your audio reached. Short Term Max: The highest short term integrated reading your audio got to. ![]() Momentary Max: The absolute highest spike, even for 1/100th of a second, your audio got to. A good loudness range for a podcast is 3-5 LU. The range is quantified in LU, and to avoid extreme events from affecting the overall result, the top 5% and the lowest 10% of the total loudness range is being excluded from the LRA measurement. Range: This describes the overall program material range: From the softest part to the loudest part. This is a useful reading when you want to know how loud something is in the moment when you’re setting levels or a spike happens. Short Term: This is the “this second” view, or what you’re hearing right now. (Or if you’re using the loudness plugin in real time it can only measure integrated from the time you hit play till the time you hit stop.) Integrated / Program: The average LUFS over the entire file. There are a few readout options for this. One unit of this measurement is called an LU. It’s a unit we use to determine how “loud” something is in a digital environment. After yesterday’s discussion on Loudness and a lot of misinformation in the thread, I figured I would make a short tutorial on loudness, compression, and how to master your podcast to where you need it.įirstly let’s talk loudness! I’ll be throwing around the term LUFS a lot. Resources /r/podcasting Wiki Related Subreddits Questions? Posted something that's missing? Ask a mod.
